Gaps on Your Resume?

Because of today's economy, many job seekers find themselves with gaps in their work history, which is often a red flag to potential employers. While it is understandable that the large numbers of unemployed in our workforce would have gaps, there are options available to job seekers who are proactive and willing to make extra efforts to achieve the next chapter in their career journey.

One of the most useful options to explore is volunteerism within your community. Not only are you providing a valuable service, but you are also building your own network of important individuals and business leaders who will observe you in action. "But I have nothing to offer," you say. "I'm justa (fill in the blank)." No one is a "justa"! Every human being has skills and talents to offer and your community needs you now more than ever. Think about it for a moment ... if you have been laid off from a clerical position, you could offer your talents to a United Way or local Hospice! Management background? How about taking that excellent gift and offering it to mentoring young entrepreneurs through your county's economic development group? Blue collar worker? Habitat for Humanity would welcome you with open arms! Retail? Help out your Food Bank! Mentor a child in a low-income school. The list, opportunity and need are endless!

The beautiful partnership that is formed when you offer your skills to these worthy organizations works both ways. Not only does the community benefit from your largess, but YOU benefit, as well. You now have continuous work experience (Professional Community Volunteer, May, 2010 - present) on your résumé, you have added many new names to your list of contacts, and (perhaps most importantly) you have made a difference in your community, which will add to your own feeling of self-worth. There is another side benefit, which could be life changing, which is that you might encounter a whole new career path during the course of your volunteer experience. Plus, you have a reason for getting up and dressed, getting out of the house, and putting your best self out in the world. Wow!

"You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give."
~ Winston Churchill
