You Count - Who Did You Impact Today?

Written by Sally Cofer-Lindberg, 8/19/10

I lost a dear friend over the weekend. He died in his sleep, which is how he would have wished his life to end. His death made headlines in his local newspaper: "Renowned Doctor dies at 65." The article went on to speak of his many contributions to society:  founder of his local Hospice, delivery of more than 2,000 babies during his 40 year medical practice, making a house call the night before he died, participating in his local theater group, and most importantly, being a loving father and grandfather to a large, extended family. My friend knew both his passions and those things that could take him into despair and depression. What I'll miss most about him is his warmth and presence. When one was with him, he was really there!

What is your passion? What moves you to the heights and can crash you to the depths? If you have been unemployed for any length of time, you know the highs and lows of the daily grind of job hunting. I heard from someone today that an individual she knows has literally papered the job market with more than 400 resumes...and has not gotten many responses. But this same individual is now out there, knocking on doors, following up and working toward building relationships. He is determined to impact that one person who can open the door to his future.

You have impacted someone today. It might be as simple as a quick smile to someone who gave you the right-of-way at a stop sign or it might be a profound moment when you were present with another human being and gave that person the gift of your undivided attention. You matter.

If you were to leave this earth tomorrow morning, how would your absence impact your loved ones? Before you are quick to say, "not much," I urge you to consider that you have the power to choose how you will respond to circumstances and interactions with life the rest of this day and in the days to come. When the hours get long and the goals we have set for ourselvs seem too big, too distant, too difficult ... that may be the most important time of all to grab onto life, look ourselves in the eye and remember who we motivate first. We will see ourselves. To life!
