Goal Setting—Your Roadmap to Success

Can you name your passion? Perhaps the real question is—are you willing to name your passion and give it life? So...how do you get to the heart of your passion...what’s the process?

  1. Dream a Big Dream: Allow yourself to create the greatest vision for your life that you can. Let go of your —Yabbits— (Yabbit — the voice of doom and gloom that lives in our heads). Yabbit wakes up when we venture out of our comfort zone and give a voice to our passion. Yabbit says things like this: —Yeah, but you don’t have the qualifications to do that.— Or —Yeah, but you are too old (or too young or too inexperienced or too overqualified) to attempt doing this.— We all have our Yabbits. Tune that voice out. Get a clear vision of your Big Dream. For now, there are no obstacles to achieving your dream. Science tells us that our subconscious believes everything we say to ourselves—when a thought gets into our subconscious, the belief system is born. We literally are what we think.

  2. Write that Big Dream down. Head your paper with the name of your Big Dream and then make a list of all of the benefits and advantages that will happen as a result of achieving this goal. The longer the list, the more your subconscious buys into your Big Dream and becomes your ally.

Create a brief Vision Statement for yourself that is easy to remember and to write. For example, if your Big Dream is to own your own retail business, your Big Dream statement might look like this: —I will create and build my retail store so successfully that I will reach $200K in sales in two years.— Your brief Vision Statement should be shorter and could say —Courage to Create & Build = Success and Income—. Put this statement everywhere. Carry it in your wallet or checkbook. Post it on your computer. Use it as a bookmark. Keep your vision in front of you at all times.

  3. Find the Roadblocks. Take a realistic look at the obstacles that you face. Write them down, analyze them and then determine what you will need to do to overcome them. What will you need? Knowledge? People? Support from the community? A successful mentor who has been in your shoes? Be as clear as possible about overcoming each roadblock you identify. You will remove the power you have given to these obstacles in the past with this process.

What if an obstacle appears to be overwhelmingly huge? Take another look at it. This experience is not unusual when we take the risk to follow our dreams. Yabbit gets really busy at this point in the process. Do not let Yabbit defeat you! A wise person once said, —Fear only chases those who run from it.— Don’t let fear stop you. You may need to find another route around this obstacle or chip away at it in smaller increments. Or...you may discover a whole new Big Dream as you work to overcome this obstacle! The most important thing in this piece of your goal-setting process is to not let fear drive you. Be as analytical as possible. Collect as much information as possible. Knowledge is power.

  4. Give yourself deadlines for each part of your Big Dream. How long will you need to achieve it? Perhaps you will need to break your Big Dream down into —naps— (little dreams that build to the Big Dream). What nap needs attention immediately? In the short term? In the long run? Be realistic in this process so that you don’t back yourself into a corner and give up on your Big Dream.

  5. Create an Action Plan. Now is the time to list everything you can think of that will lead to success in achieving your Big Dream. Make your road map. List every step necessary to reach your goal. Then prioritize your steps.

  6. Refine & Define. Look at your Action Plan. Rewrite it, refine it, make it as clean and clear as possible.

  7. Visualize. See yourself being successful. Remember our subconscious? Every time you imagine yourself achieving and living your Big Dream, your subconscious agrees with you! Keep your Vision and your Big Dream crystal clear. Use all of the ways human beings learn to maximize the visualization process: see it, say it, write it, feel it, believe it!

When you experience a setback (and we all do), it is even more important to keep your vision clear. Never give up—your Big Dream and your future await!
